Lake Toro (塘路湖)

As my tour guests asked me to drop by somewhere beautiful on the way back to Kushiro,  I chose Lake Toro (塘路湖).

Now is the best season to see autumnal leaves around here!

We enjoyed trekking around the lake for a while.......

How beautiful and peaceful the lake is!!

Actually I sometimes come here during the summer time, because this lake is a famous spot for...............

canoeing!! I really love outdoor sports very much!

We were so excited to encounter wild animals such as red foxes......

Marché Yamahana (マルシェ山花)| Chiffon Cakes & Fresh Vegetables | Kushiro

We came to Kushiro (釧路), which is famous for red crested cranes! This is a cafe that I had wanted to drop by for a long time......

"Marché Yamahana (マルシェ山花)" consists of two areas; Farmer's Market and ............

a chiffon cafe. I order a monthly special! Sounds wonderful, doesn't it?

I love this cozy atmosphere!

Voila!
This is "green tea and azuki red been chiffon (抹茶あずき)".

They use green tea produced in Oyama Fram at Uji (宇治抹茶小山園).

Fluffy x 2!! And it is very fragrant!!! I love green tea!

Of course I recommend their standard chiffon↓

Especially "Quarter (クォーター)", which has four kinds of standard chiffon; pumpkin, vanilla, coco chocolate, and sesame!

This cafe is near "Kushiro city zoo (釧路市動物園)" and "Japanese Crane Reserve (釧路市丹頂鶴自然公園)".
(If you're interested in "Japanese Crane Reserve (釧路市丹頂鶴自然公園)", please refer to my other post→

Lake Akan Ainu Village (阿寒湖アイヌコタン)| Kushiro

I'm now in the Akan National Park↓ The lake is still partly frozen even in April!

First, we went to "Lake Akan Ainu Village (阿寒湖アイヌコタン)".
(* Ainu is one of the indigenous people in Japan.)

"Lake Akan Ainu Village (阿寒湖アイヌコタン)" is the biggest Ainu settlement in Hokkaido, and home to 130 Ainu.

When we came here at night, the scenery was like this↓ How romantic it is!

They sell their handmade folk arts here!

I personally recommend their wood crafts and embroidery.....

A lot of my tour guests enjoyed shopping, and communicating them here!

Going up the slope, we can appreciate their altar. The striped owl is one of their most revered gods.

Beside the altar, there are some their traditional housing named chise (チセ)↓

This is ponchise (ポンチセ). Pon means small, and chise means housing in Ainu language. Let's enter it!

Wow! How pon it is! Hahaha!

One of the main attractions here is Ainu performance in the Lake Akan Ainu Theather "Ikoro" (阿寒湖アイヌシアター「イコロ」↓
Look at the tour guest just in front of the theater! He posed like a striped owl!!!

Ainu people have had great respect to the environment where they've lived since ancient times. The traditional dance of the Ainu people, which is designated as an Important Intangible Cultural asset, is performed here several times a day.

We enjoyed some of their performance. For example .................

■ITASANKA (Sitting Song) -- イタサンカ(座り歌)
This song begins with Ainu women sitting around a treasure box, called Shhintoko. It helps women relax at the ceremony.

■UTAREOPUNPAREWA (The first dance of feast) --- 祝宴の時の最初の踊り(ウタレオプンパレワ)

■SARORUNRIMUSE (Crane Dance) --- 鶴の舞(サロルンリムセ)
The dancers mimic cranes' wingspan and voices.

They played their musical instruments, too.

■MUKKURI (Ainu musical instrument) --- 口琴(ムックリ)
Mukkuri is their traditional musical instrument that was typically played by women only. It produces rhythmic, haunting, chant-like sounds.

■TONKORI (Ainu musical insturument) ---竪琴(トンコリ)
Tonkori is often used in performances of the Kamuy-Yukar (songs of the Gods), and religious ceremonies. Tonkori is an important instrument for Ainu culture in which objects themselves are all considered deities. All Tonkori are custom-made for the player and the sizes and designs vary.

They performed  dances that audience can join. For example...........

■SHINENOKKAITONMENMENOKO (Dance of Lady-Killer) --- 色男の踊り(シネンオッカイトゥンメノコ)
This is a humorous dance in which two women fight for one men.

After the performance, one of the audience became a "lady-killer"! Hahaha!

■ESSAHOHO (Dance in a Circle) --- 踊り比べ(エッサーホーホー)
People dance in a circle. There are many different steps and pattern in it.
Of course, I also joined it!

I couldn't take good pictures of "FUTTARECHUI (Dance of Ainu girls with black hair) --- 黒髪の踊り(フッタレチュイ)", but the playful but difficult dance performance by women with long black hairs is one of my favorites. Please check it when you come here!

Thank you very much, performers! We really enjoyed Ainu culture today.

If you want to reproduce the sounds of Mukkuri, you can buy it here. I know it is really difficult to play it, through!

* Are you interested in traditional Ainu dishes? Actually I tried them in this village. Please check my other post, and enjoy them virtually!→click here!

Coffee Shop Rapport (コーヒーショップ ら・ぽーと)| Tancho Kushiro Airport

I've arrived at the Tancho Kushiro Airport (たんちょう釧路空港), located in the eastern part of Hokkaido↓

As I got hungry as usual, I dropped by "Coffee Shop Rapport (コーヒーショップ ら・ぽーと)". It looks like a usual airport cafe, but I've found a special menu!!

Have you notice why I've decided to stay here?

I didn't know I can drink rich and delicious milk produced by Moritaka Farm (森高牧場) in Akkeshi (厚岸)  here in this cafe!! Wow!! Wow!! Wow!!
Its milk fat content is more than 4.0%, and it tastes very tasty! Furthermore, it is available only in the eastern part of Hokkaido! How lucky I am to find this cafe!!

I ordered soft ice cream made of the special milk and sugar only! Yummy x 2!!

I'll be back to Sapporo!

Kuidokoro Sakebanya (喰処 鮭番屋)| Seafood BBQ Restaurant | Kushiro

If you want to eat fresh seafood early in the morning in Kushiro, how about "Kuidokoro Sakebanya (喰処 鮭番屋)"?

This is a seafood BBQ restaurant, and

we can enjoy fresh seafood such as squid, Pacific saury, and salmon caught off Kushiro (釧路).

Look at the variety of choices; dried fish to ...................

alive seafood in the fish tank such as scallops and oysters.

Grill over charcoal fire, and fish flavor increases dramatically!

Actually I ordered seafood bowls↓ Which do you like the best? I love all of them; shrimps, salmon roe, and Tokisake salmon (時鮭)................., and surprisingly or naturally I ate all of them! Hahaha!

We can choose the size of rice! I think this is a good idea! Because like me, some people want to eat a lot, or can order some small-sized seafood bowls at the same time!!

Until the dishes were served, I was relaxed, drinking free tea .................

Voila! This is a shrimp and salmon roe bowl (えび・いくら丼)↓

Look at the plump, succulent shrimp! Yummy x 2!!

The roe is from the freshly-caught salmon in this season! Perfect!

This is a Tokisake salmon bowl (とき丼)↓

They use only Tokisake salmon caught with a fixed netting off Kushiro. How high the quality is!!

The seafood bowls come with miso soup.

I love this fishing town!!!

The operation time of this restaurant is from 7:30 to 14:00. Wonderful, isn't it? It takes 20 minutes from JR Kushiro station to this restaurant on foot.
