The 14th Kibidango Festical (きびだんごまつり)| Kuriyama

Spring has just come to Hokkaido! A lot of festivals have been held in this season.
Today I'll show you "Shinise Festical (老舗まつり)" held in Kuriyama, a small town located 40 minutes away from Sapporo.
Kurihama held two festivals at the same time last weekend; "Kibidango Festical (きびだんごまつり)" and "Sakagura Festival (酒蔵まつり)"!

*Shinise means long-established stores.
**Kibidango is a sweet dumpling made of mochi flour, sugar, and maltose.
***Sakagura means sake berwery.

First, we joined the "14th Kibidanbo Festical (きびだんごまつり)".  "Tanita (谷田製菓㈱)" started its business in 1923, one of the long-established sweet makers in this town, serving delicious kibidango dumplings.

A lot of people gathered at the festival site, and bought their delicious kibidango! Actually the dumplings are so traditional that I've eaten them only a few time so far!! This is a good chance to know the traditional sweets!!

Look at the panels!

They are very enjoyable!
Why is there Peach Boy in the pics?
I'll show you "Peach Boy (桃太郎)", a Japanese fairy tale, and explain why their mascot is Peach Boy. This is the story↓

♪♪Once upon a time, an old man and his wife lived in a place.
One day when she was washing clothes in a river, a huge peach was flowing from the upper stream. She brought it to their house, and tried to eat it with his husband.
When he cut the peach, a baby boy came out of the inside. They named the boy "Momotaro(桃太郎), which means a peach boy, and raised him as their child. The couple were so happy because they hadn't have their children.
When Momotaro grew up, he knew people were suffered from ogres, and decided to go to the Ogres' Island to attack them.
Momotaro got kigidango dumplings from his parents, and went for ogre extermination. On the way to the island, he met three animals; a monkey, a dog, and a pheasant, gave some kigidango dumplings to them, and went to the island together.
Momotaro beat all ogres, and brought a lot of treasures from the island to their home. Momotaro and his parents lived happily ever after!!♪♪

When we come here, we should join the factory tour! I really wanted to see how to make kigidango, a very traditional sweet treat.

First we got kigidango as a present at the gate! How lucky we were!!!

Before the tour, let's learn the ingredients; mochi ricesuger, maltose, and kidney beans. Are you ready??? Shall we start the tour?

Wow! The traditional sweets are produced manually! I thought they used several machine to make it!!!

Kigidango is cut here and

wrap it like this! Wow! Wow! Wow!

At the exit, the boxes of kigidango were piled up like this. Kuriyama is a very peaceful rural town, and it seems they don't have to think somebody may steal the boxes! Hahaha!

They produce several kinds of kigidango.

A local person, a tour participant, voluntarily told us that these three kinds are recommendable; a normal one, a milk-flavored one, and melon-flavored one.

We really enjoyed the "Kigidango Festiva"l!!

Next we moved to the "24th Sakagura or Sake Brewey Festival". One the way to the festival site, there are a lot of stalls along the street, and we enjoyed some local food!

Look at the HUGE bean jam buns, which were bigger than my face!!!

How about fried dough cookies? Looks very traditional and delicious!

I love fried bread and bought it!! What's in the bread???

Voila!!!

Fish sausage was in the bread! Yummy x 2!!!

After coming back home, I tried kigidango!

It had three pieces of normal one, and one piece of melon flavored one.

It tastes like caramel candy!
This was the first time to eat melon kigidango, but it was much much more delicious than I thought! I love it!

I really love local festivals!

After the Kibidango Festival,  we went to the "Sakagura Festival", in which we drank a lot of sake!!! If you are interested in the Sake Brewery Festival, please click here→

Hachiya (蜂屋)| Ramen Restautant | Asahikawa

Hokkaido has several places which are famous for ramen noodles! Asahikawa is one of them. Typical Asahikawa ramen means ramen with fish-and-pork based broth.
Today I'll show you  "Hachiya (蜂屋)",  one of the most popular ramen shops in the city.

I recommend its main restaurant, but the other day I visited its branch in a restaurant alley called "furariito (ふらりーと)" in the downtown of Asahikawa.

See!! Several kinds of restaurants are along the alley, including ramen, yakitori (grilled chicken), udon noodels, loach restaurants and so on. Looks very nice, doesn't it?

Let's enter "Hachiya (蜂屋)"!!

Asahikawa ramen remainds us of shoyu (soy sauce-flavored) ramen!
In this restaurant, we can select the hardness of noodles and thickness of the soup in any favor!

This is shoyu ramen! They use dried horse mackerel and pork bones for their broth. One of my favorite points for this ramen is black lard.
This is how to make it. Lard are heated with shaved dried horse mackerel until it becomes black. This lard has distinctive roasted flavor, and is a kind of addictive taste!

Look at the big and thin char siu! Yummy x 2!!

The noodles are straight type like this↓

If you want to try black lard a lot, please say that to the staff. It looks very black like this↓, but actually very delicious and recommendable!
I always order syoyu ramen with more black lard and harder noodles.

If you are hungry, how about a ramen set? It has rice and gyoza dumplings! Yummy x 2!!!

I love "Hachiya (蜂屋)" very much!!!

Menmen (めんめん)| Japanese Vermicelli Restaurant | Iwamizawa

Have you ever heard or tried somen noodles or Japanese vermicelli? They are made of flour, and very common noodles especially during the summer time. Usually dried somen are used, but today I'll show you "Menmen (めんめん)", a somen restaurant, using fresh noodles, which are much much more delicious than dried ones. Sounds yummy x 2, doesn't it?

They serve cold and hot somen, and some other dishes such as a chicken bowl, ramen noodles and so on........

Voila!
I ordered a chicken bowl and cold somen "first"!

I love this half-cooked egg! Yummy x 2!!

This is a cold somen. I'm sure this is a king of somen! The fresh noodles are very elastic & chewy like udon noodles, and unbelievably delicious!!! Please try it!!!

This poster says they use special chicken for the soup and excellent brand flour for somen. Well, well, well, the wheat for the noodles are produced in this area!!! I love something local!
After reading it..................

I ordered hot ones, too! Hahaha!
Usually I prefer cold noodles because cold ones are more springy, but their hot somen are very recommendable!!!
Can I have another helping? Just kidding! (←You ate too much!!!)

This restaurant is located in Iwamizawa, 40 minutes away from Sapporo.

DxM | Morihiko's Doughnut Cafe | Sapporo

Morihiko is one of the famous coffee roasters and cafe designers in Sapporo. I visited "DxM", one of his cafes located near Sapporo Factory, specializing doughnuts and coffee.

Everything here is cool! Open the first door, and you will find this menu.

And then open the second door, the fireplace will welcome you! I love this atmosphere!!

What should I order??? Their doughnuts are so delicious that whenever I visit Sapporo Factory (a shopping mall near this cafe), I drop by "DxM".

Let's go upstairs.
There is a looooooooong counter seats like this, and even when you come here alone, you can enjoy the meal comfortably! Time moves very slowly here!

This cafe is very stylish from any angle. This is a pic from the second floor!

This is the second floor from a different angle!

I really recommend their coffee!!
However I cannot drink it, and ordered one of the soup! Sorry I cannot show you their delicious coffee!!!

Voila!
This is my lunch!!!

This is borscht, a Russian soup, which contains a lot of vegetables like this. Yummy x 2!!!

Each doughnut has its nickname like this↓
This is CABOCHA, a doughnut with soy milk and pumpkin. Very healthy, isn't it??

This is CRIMSON, a doughnut with rhubarb jam.

Have you ever eaten rhubarb?
Rhubarb is a cool season, perennial vegetable, grown for its leafstalks that have a unique tangy taste used for pies and sauces.

Do you smoke?
Don't worry about it. Its smoking room is also fashionable!!

As there are no chatty high school students nor housewives in this cafe, we can spend comfortable time eating delicious doughnuts while drinking tasty coffee here!

I should buy some doughnuts for my family members!

This is JAPONE, a doughnut with tasted soy flour and sweet potatoes!

This is OPERA, a chocolate doughnut. It's really recommendable!!!

This is CASABLANCA, a berry doughnut! They use three kinds of berries for the doughnut!!

This is AMANDA, a standard doughnut! You must try it first!

We can buy their doughnuts at Maruiimai department store, too! When you come to Odori area, please try some of them!

■Where is "DxM"?

Are you interested in his other cafe?
Please visit some of them↓
